BRUCE & PHYLLIS JACOBSON SCHOLARSHIP
For undergraduates who will be freshmen in the fall
After Karl “Bruce” Jacobson passed away in 2014, Phyllis contacted First United Methodist Church, Oak Ridge, and the Holston Conference Foundation about the creation of a scholarship in Bruce’s memory. Phyllis felt that a scholarship would be particularly appropriate since Bruce was an educator at heart and in practice beyond his career as a research scientist. Even in retirement, Bruce taught ORICL classes and never stopped being an active learner and teacher.
Bruce and Phyllis met in the young adult Sunday school class taught by Phyllis’ mother at Euclid Methodist Church in Toledo, Ohio. Bruce was about to be drafted into the military for the Korean War and Phyllis was just back from college. They fell in love and were married at Euclid Methodist Church in 1951.
The Jacobson’s moved to Oak Ridge in 1958 from California and their four-year-old daughter, Deborah, implored them to go to “the church with the big steeple” that very first Sunday…and they never left. The Jacobson’s made Oak Ridge their home raising one daughter and three sons in the Church. Both were very active in church life. She sang in the choir and he headed many committees. Both taught Sunday school. She also taught elementary school in Oak Ridge. Together they left their mark on the world and during those 63 years together, they never took for granted the many blessings in their lives.
Phyllis hopes that this scholarship will positively touch a student’s life and that they will in turn pass along something good themselves.
