Community Meal

“Give us this day our daily bread” is the only request in the Lord’s Prayer for anything material. As it’s important to our Lord and Savior, then it is important to our church.

We’re so materially blessed that it’s almost hard to imagine that there are so many local people in need of a good meal.  But there are, and every Wednesday, our community meal ministry team prepares 180 meals to go for local people in need. These are hot, cooked meals served together with a piece of fruit, home-baked cookies and a granola bar for the next day’s breakfast. All of this is done by a team of 40 volunteers, some of whom work every week, some once a month and others somewhere in-between.

Tasks include:

  • Planning the meal (it changes every week) and ordering the food
  • Cooking
  • Plating
  • Packaging
  • Distributing at the welcome center door–we now offer the option to come in and eat the meal in the fellowship hall
  • Cleaning up

All of this must be planned and managed by someone who knows everyone’s schedules, role in providing the meal.  Emails with schedules and assignments have to go out.  Participation needs to be confirmed and adjusted based on the personal schedule changes of the 15 or so that are involved every week.

This ministry is not funded through the church budget, but by a grant from the Y-12 Federal Credit Union and other external grants.

If you are interested in joining the team on Wednesdays or supporting it in any other way, we will warmly welcome you into our beautiful ministry. Contact jcaughman@fumcor.org for more information or to volunteer.
