Each month, I will interview someone from our congregation. This month, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jan Melcher.
Denna: Jan, you have such a heart for service. You are always volunteering for something! What motivates you?
Jan: God speaks to us. There is this power that is humming along inside of us. I feel a responsibility to respond.
Denna: One of the volunteer positions you hold is on the community meal team. If you could create the ultimate sandwich, what would be on it?
Jan: Oh… It would be something like a club sandwich. It would have layers of different meats and cheeses, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mustard, and mayo, all on rye bread.
Denna: You are also an avid reader. Do you have a favorite book?
Jan: I actually have two favorites. The first is “My Antonia” by Willa Cather, which tells the story of immigrants in the Great Plains. The other is “Hot Honey,” a mystery with a strong non-fiction component that educates and speaks to the transgender community.
Denna: What is one item you cannot live without?
Jan: Coffee.
Denna: What is on your playlist?
Jan: Elton John, Darius Rucker, and Van Morrison.
Denna: What is the best Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor?
Jan: Although I don’t eat it much anymore, my favorite is Cherry Garcia.
