Our missions team just returned from an effort led by the Florida Conference of the United Methodist church to aid in the recovery after Hurricane Ian in SW Florida in September 2022. Our team focused on helping rebuild a home in Port Charlotte, north of Ft. Myers, severely damaged in that storm.
The homeowner had lived in her house for almost five months without an intact roof; water had damaged much of the inside contents and caused marked problems with mold. Earlier groups had done the ādemoā work tearing out rotten insulation and discarding the moldy items. Aside from a Minnesota team reconstructing a new roof in February, our mission team was the first to do repair work on the houseās inside. Our team provided solid carpentry skills in doing the work. The homeowner, a 67 year old single lady without homeownerās insurance, was extremely grateful for the work and effort our team provided. The mission trip included 4 ½ days of working and 1 ½ days of traveling by church bus each way to the destination (April 1-9). It was coordinated with the Florida Conference of the UMC.
Team members included Jim Hardy (team leader) and Mary Ann, Lyman Bowker, Jim Giles, Bill Henry, Greg Hinkel, Jim Michel, Roger Roach, and Greg and Becky Smith. Bowker and Giles joined from Kern UMC.
