JEANETTE REYNOLDS SCHOLARSHIP

For students interested in full time ministry in the United Methodist Church

Jeanette Pennington, born March 8, 1902 in Pennington Gap Virginia, married Abram David Reynolds in 1925, after she graduated from East Tennessee University. She was a school teacher in Bristol Tennessee until she retired. She moved to the Oak Ridge area in the early 1970’s and began attending First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge with her niece, the late Jean Petersen, and her niece’s husband, the late Guy Petersen. Jeannette enjoyed teaching people about anything, including gardening, playing the piano and sewing, and about the historical ancestors on both the Pennington and the Reynolds sides of her family. She enjoyed her life greatly until her passing in July of 1991 at the age of 89, at which point she donated her body to Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Her ambition was always to make learning fun and interesting, and she loved conversation that challenged conventional ideas. It was because teaching was her greatest joy and passion, and because she had a heart for those whose greatest desire was to learn, that she was inspired to create the Jeannette P. Reynolds memorial scholarship.
