STEWARDSHIP

Giving in Gratitude Logo First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, TN

In his 2nd letter to the Corinthians, Paul reflected, “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous in every way. Such generosity produces thanksgiving to God through us.” Indeed, we are grateful for the many blessings of God in our lives, and in this season of Thanksgiving, we offer our thanks to God in Christ Jesus first and foremost. In that spirit of gratitude to God, we at First Church now approach our annual Stewardship Campaign.

As we all know, Stewardship Campaigns are about money, and you can find more information about FUMCOR’s current financials and budget in the enclosures and on our website (fumcor.org). However, giving is not about budgets; it is about our grateful response for God’s amazing works of grace in our lives. God has richly blessed us so that we can be generous. To grow as Christ’s disciples, we need to give thanks in gratefulness to God.

“I grew up in this church, an the sanctuary was always my favorite place—a beautiful, quiet refuge for prayer.”  -Recent Visitor

At the heart of facilities care at First Church is a team of staff who love and care for this building. They order supplies, clean meticulously, troubleshoot HVAC computer asynchronization, and even relocate bats. Maintaining an old building with old systems comes with a cost, but First Church’s knowledgeable facilities team thinks long-term and is able to make repairs and undertake maintenance tasks that avoid short-term patchwork and expensive contracts. The result is a building that has maintained its original beauty even as it functions well for the myriad of groups and activities that meet within its walls every single day. In addition to worship, small groups, studies, meetings, rehearsals, and meals, the First Church building also houses important ministries for the youngest and oldest in our community through First Steps Child Development Center and Keystone Daycare. In an age when many church buildings sit empty most of the time, First Church remains a hub of activity in Oak Ridge, which is possible because of the congregation’s commitment to care for, maintain, and improve the church facilities.

A PRIMARY STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN GOAL IS THAT EVERY PERSON OR HOUSEHOLD WILL GIVE AND GIVE MORE.

Below is a table. Find where you are on this table based on your annual income (far left column) and what you are currently giving to First Church (based on a once monthly gift). Then, follow the table to the left and consider what it would look like for you to move to the next level of giving; from entry-level to growth, from growth to discipleship, or from discipleship to challenge giving. If you are not currently giving, consider where you are comfortable starting, or reach out to Pastors Ken (ksauer@fumcor.org) or Clair (csauer@fumcor.org) to learn more about returning thanks to God through our gifts.

GROW YOUR GIVING

Step Up Giving-2026 First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, TN

What we know to be true is that there is great joy in giving generously, and once the habit is established it is far easier to give more. There is this wonderful cycle where God blesses us, our gifts become a blessing to others, and we are blessed again in the giving. In 2026, your commitment to increase your giving in gratitude to God will enable us to invest more in our children and youth, to provide more funding for First Recovery, and to give more toward the United Methodist mission around the world. These are vital ministries that offer hope, joy, and love to people in our church, our community, and around the world.

FUMCOR PLEDGED GIVING AND BUDGET HISTORY

Pledged Giving 2025 First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, TN

Last year, FUMCOR received 209 pledges totaling nearly $1.2 million. Pledged gifts, non-pledged gifts, loose plate offerings, and designated funds support First Church’s $1.5 million operating budget for 2025 and enable ministries that are transforming lives every day.

*If you want more detailed information about the 2025 church budget and financials, the most current church financials are always available for review in the church office.

Non-budget Ministry Giving First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, TN

According to a report by Vanco Services in 2023, “Christians are only giving 2.5% of their income.”

If the total pledged to First Church in 2025 ($1,197,292) represents the average Christian’s gift – an offering equal to 2.5% of income – then consider that the church budget could be $2.4 million if the average gift represented 5% of income, or $4.8 million if everyone tithed (an offering of 10% of income)!

With an increase of pledged gifts of almost $85,000 in 2025, First Church was able to partiallly fund First Recovery through the budget. But we want to do more; more for First Recovery, more for our children and youth, and more for our United Methodist mission. Moving the needle on the average gift by just 2.5% will generate adequate funding not only for First Recovery, but also the Community Meals, and Shoppes – other vital ministries of this church not currently covered by budgetary funds. If that’s possible with just a 2.5% increase, imagine what could happen if every person tithed!

Will you join those who are already giving and giving more? We invite you to be a blessing to all who are touched by the ministries of First United Methodist Church as we celebrate Commitment Sunday on November 23. Prayerfully consider how you will give thanks to God by growing your giving in the coming year. Then complete the your estimate of giving below, or complete a pledge card and bring it with you on Commitment Sunday, or mail it back to the church office (FUMCOR, attn: Finance Director, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830).

We should all give and give generously. That is how we say “thank you” to God for all the blessings God provides us. Giving is how we prioritize God and reflect the value of God’s work in our lives. And when we give, the blessings we have received from God are passed along to be a blessing in the lives of others.
